The Central Valley’s triple-digit heat wave is forcing businesses to modify their schedules. The Davis Farmers Market called off the July 3 Picnic in the Park, and announced it will close at noon on Saturday. The Davis Kiwanis Club canceled its Fourth of July Kiddie Parade.
Other businesses are feeling the stress of this possible record-breaking hot streak as well. Read on for details, along with other breaking business news.
→ Exploding in a bad way: On Sunday, friends helped Mabel’s Farm Box move to its new, larger space at 222 D St., Suite 1, last occupied by Wines in Tandem. The charcuterie and gourmet food store’s previous space was at 227 E St., Suite 3.
“We had an amazing move on Sunday,” owner Shelley Dunning wrote in an email. “Over the course of the day, about 60 people showed up to move product and then set it up in the store. It was wonderful.”
She planned to open the store on Friday. But the air-conditioning system is broken. It’s “93° in the store today (Tuesday) with the thermostat set at 68,” she wrote. “Some of my products have exploded from the heat.”
When it reopens, its new name will be Mabel’s Market. Stay tuned on when that will be. The landlord told her it may take up to two weeks for the AC repair.
The larger location allows her to expand the selection of market items, which will be sold at the front of the store. She’s working on plans for a beer and wine license, and a small kitchen. The back of the space will become a bistro that will serve small plates, highlighting what she sells at the market.

→ Patio (h)eating: The new patio for Upper Crust Baking is open, just in time for the heat wave. It plans a formal grand opening of the space soon.
