Looking back – and ahead – at the top local business changes
Here are the stories that rose to the top in the last year
It’s that time of year when everyone publishes a roundup of the top news from the previous year. I’ve got a list of the biggest comings and goings from 2024, and the businesses most anticipated in 2025.
→ Looking ahead in 2025:
Davis Collections is replacing University Mall on Russell Boulevard, with Nordstrom Rack as the retail anchor and Calicraft Brewing as the restaurant anchor.
Sierra, the outdoor retailer formerly known as Sierra Trading Post will fill the old OfficeMax spot at 2107 Cowell Blvd.
Estelle Bakery & Patisserie replaces Konditorei Austrian Pastry Cafe at 2710 Fifth St.
Orangetheory Fitness has quite a following. It’s taking part of the Seasons Kitchen & Bar space at 102 F St.
Taffack Ethiopian Cuisine is filling the spot last occupied by Bones Craft Kitchen at 113 D St.
Chipotle is coming to the former Cindy’s Restaurant space at 4823 Chiles Road in South Davis, and will include a drive thru.
→ Top arrivals in 2024:
Fluffy Donuts reopened at 1260 Lake Blvd., Suite 110 in West Davis after being forced out of University Mall.
Tabby Tea Cat Lounge and Adoption Center is Davis’ closest thing to a cat cafe. It’s inside Cat Tales Feline Health Center, 606 W. Covell Blvd.
The Goodnight Room is a private speakeasy club at 524 Main St., Suite 101 in Woodland.
Sunny’s Car Wash at 480 Mace Blvd. cleans the outside of your car and lets you use the vacuums for free.
Volt Coffee, Tea & Taps is a fun little find at 1123 Olive Drive.
Maya’s Authentic Mexican just got a lavender paint job at 237 D St.
Bruxie chicken & waffles opened at 500 First St., Suite 9, in Davis Commons
→ The biggest 2024 closures:
All Things Right & Relevant consignment and thrift store, 2801 Spafford St., is sadly no more.
Seasons Kitchen & Bar, 102 F St., shut down.
Cable Car Wash, 904 Third St., ended a rocky year with a permanent closure.
A Better Place to Bead, a beading store closed at 1520 E. Covell Blvd., Suite 2
Let Them Eat Cake closed its storefront at 310 C St. but will still take wedding cake orders.
3rd & U Cafe, 223 Third St., is gone.
The Smart Axe, a fun ax-throwing venue, was at 720 Olive Drive, Suite 2.
→ There’s a spreadsheet for that: The redesigned Davis Business Tracker lists the status of hundreds of Davis businesses. The new design is easier to read and sort. It’s a great resource when you want to check on merchants that I’ve written about in recent years.
