New Round Table coming around
Also, Estelle gets paint, salon to reopen, fencing academy moves, Woodland adds some Twist and more
The Round Table Pizza is close to opening at 4551 Second St., Suites 100 and 110 in the Second Street Crossing center in Davis.
It’s passed all but its final inspection. I walked in on Friday afternoon, just as a city inspector was leaving. Owner Ben Singh said he hopes to open the restaurant on Monday, Oct. 28.
→ Icing on the cake: Readers are excited to see visible progress on the future Estelle Bakery & Pâtisserie at 2710 Fifth St. in Davis. Its exterior was recently painted a cream color. Inside, you can see a few new fixtures being prepped for installation.
→ Salon swap: The hair salon Avant Garde changed ownership in September. New owner Julie Moore changed the name to Maison des Arts.
The salon, at 439 G St., is completing its makeover, and hopes to have a soft opening on Friday, Nov. 1. From noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, Moore plans an open house for its grand opening.
It will feature hair, barbershop, threading and nail services. It has the capacity for six hair stylists, two barbers, two nail technicians and rotating pop-up artisans. Visit its website for more.
→ New digs: The fencing gym True Focus Sports Academy recently moved. Previously in Fifth Street Plaza at 2880 Fifth St., Suite 100, it’s now at 720 Olive Drive, Suite U2.
It offers coaching for competitive youth fencing. Visit its website for details.
I’m still trying to learn what will fill its old spot. There is a pending license application for retail sales of alcohol for off-site consumption, so it could be a mini mart or liquor store.
→ Triple twist: Back in June, I told you about a large restaurant space at Woodland Gateway that would soon be filled with three concepts under one roof: Pizza Twist, Taco Twist and Naan Twist. The first one opened on Oct. 18. The second two opened today at 2115 Bronze Star Drive, Suite 100. It’s in a new pad across from In-N-Out, near the new Cold Stone Creamery and Crumbl Cookies.
Each brand serves street food that is a fusion with Indian food, adding Italian or Mexican styles. Pizza Twist has traditional pizzas, and vegan, vegetarian and halal options. Taco Twist has Indian-Mexican street food, like tacos made with naan. Naan Twist has fresh naan bread, sweets, samosas, bakery items, and Indian curries, burgers and wraps. Gluten-free options are available at all three.
The 3,620-square-foot space has a drive-thru. It also has a beer and wine license.
→ Attorney moves: After 10 years downtown, The Schaps Law Office will move to 1109 Kennedy Place, Suite 3, as of Nov. 1. Its current space is at 723 Third St., Suite B.
“We are a civil litigation boutique, handling business and property disputes, serious personal injury cases, and other matters,” attorney Mike Schaps said Friday.
→ Just ask: Now for an update on my livelihood. I was offering new subscribers a seven-day free trial to my Substack. Not anymore. In the last week, I’ve had three subscribers dispute the automatic charge to their credit card that’s triggered when the trial period ends.
They probably have no idea that with each dispute, Substack’s payment platform Stripe charges me $15, regardless of the outcome of the inquiry. If they’d promptly messaged me, I would have given them a refund. Nevertheless, today’s newsletter is without a paywall.
→ New spreadsheet: I’m excited about my beautiful new spreadsheet. Thanks for all the compliments. The Davis Business Tracker, lists the status of hundreds of Davis businesses. The new design is easier to read and sort.

Can’t wait for Estelle!! 😋
I am so happy to see something finally going into 2710 5th St.
