One fitness door closes, another on the map
Also, new tenant for Black Frog Coffee space; speculation on what will fill OfficeMax; several proposals before the city; and a De Colores revival in Woodland
My tipsters came through for me this week, passing on tidbits that led me to news about two fitness studios and one açai bowl shop. Read on for the details.
Note: I’m trying to break out of my routine of publishing mostly on Thursdays. For 23 years, I’ve planned my work around this deadline day (for a Sunday newspaper). It’s a hard habit to break. My goal is to publish shorter, more frequent newsletters, as news develops and my schedule allows. Let me know what you think. This column isn’t as short as I planned but imagine if I waited two more days?
→ Seeing Orange: Orangetheory Fitness’ app now lists a Davis location: 102 F St., the site of the recently closed Seasons Kitchen & Bar.
We already knew that the owners of the local franchise, who don’t want their names public just yet, said they are working on a lease for a 2,300-square-foot space in downtown Davis. Meanwhile, a local restaurateur told me they’d been negotiating with the landlord to share the space with Orangetheory. The fitness center was to take the meeting room and patio, leaving the kitchen and most of the dining area for the eatery. The restaurant plans fell through but it appears Orangetheory is solid enough for it to be listed on its app. It’s not yet on the company’s website, however.
If a restaurant doesn’t fill the remaining space, the Hilton Garden Inn would likely continue to use it for catering and special events. The hotel and 3,300-square-foot Seasons space are owned by Presidio Companies. I left messages for Presidio’s Managing Principal Guneet Bajwa and the owners of the Orangetheory franchise but did not hear back. As of August, the franchise owners hoped to open the gym in early 2025.
→ Women’s fitness club closes: The KaiaFIT in Davis permanently closed on Sept. 13. It was at 417 Mace Blvd., Suite N, in the El Macero Center.
The company’s classes focus on cross training. There’s boot camp, barre, TRX, weight work, power yoga and other exercises. It also encourages clean eating, and offers suggested meal plans. The closest KaiaFIT is now in Woodland, at 1240 Commerce Ave., Suite D.
KaiaFIT Davis owner Ana Thorne notified clients in an Aug. 15 email: “It is with a heavy heart (that I) notify you the KaiaFIT Davis studio will permanently close. … After exhausting all options as well as considering personal constraints, it is necessary.”
She thanked members and coaches for their support in the five years since she took over franchise.
