Cat Tales Feline Health opened this month in Anderson Plaza. But what’s getting the most attention is its Tabby Tea Cat Lounge & Adoption Center, where the cat curious can spend time with feline friends.
The business is at 606 W. Covell Blvd. in Davis. It fills the space left vacant by Aggie Ace. The full-service cat-only veterinary practice includes medicine, surgery, radiology, ultrasound, dentistry and boarding for its clients.
I spoke with Julie Cole, who owns the business with her husband and fellow longtime vet Chris Shacoski. Cole said some of the inspiration for the lounge came from a group of DaVinci High School students who presented it as their “Shark Tank” project. Shacoski heard the proposal when at a local Rotary Club meeting. The vets were already planning a cat lounge, but the students helped design the logo and offered other input
The cat lounge costs $10 per hour, with all proceeds supporting the Yolo County SPCA. Admission will include coffee, pre-packaged boba teas and Wi-Fi. They’re still working on those plans, which require that the beverages be covered.
On Thursday morning, I visited with a tailless orange tabby named Buddy and his kitten cohort, Peter Pan, a spunky gray tabby. Buddy already has an adopter and another person is interested in Peter Pan. A new influx of cats and kittens will arrive soon.
Cole said the lounge has been a hit. She got choked up when she spoke of a caregiver who brought in an elderly woman in a wheelchair. The cats have a way of connecting with people and bringing out their personalities.
They are working on a pilot program with Meals on Wheels Yolo County for a Pets and Wellness Sessions (PAWS) program that would deliver pet food, and provide socialization activities for seniors.
The lounge is open to children ages 8 and up, when accompanied by an adult. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5. p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Book a spot here. The vet clinic has similar hours, but opens at 8 a.m.
→ Bakery byes: Let Them Eat Cake plans a going-away party on Sunday at its bakery store, 310 C St., Davis.
“Join us for one last hurrah … as we bid our precious storefront farewell,” it posted on Instagram. The event is from 1 to 4 p.m.
Its last day of operation is Monday, Dec. 23. As I reported last week, it’s downsizing to focus on the most popular part of its business: wedding cakes.
